James Michael “Gunther” From FRIENDS Dies At The Age Of 59 From Cancer

Everyone’s beloved Gunther left for heavenly abode

James Michael Tyler, who was born on 28th May 1962 died on 24th October 2021, after fighting cancer for two years. James was famous for his role in FRIENDS as Gunther. However, he never got a massive screen timing unlike the main characters, but he was equally loved by the TV sitcom FRIENDS fandom. He played the role of Gunther from 1994 to 2004. He was married to Barbara Chadsey in 1995 but the couple divorced. However, he married Jennifer Carno in 2017.

James Michael Tyler died of prostate cancer

Tyler never disclosed his illness until the reunion of Friends in 2021. He disclosed his illness due to prostate cancer in June 2021. Michael Tyler then revealed that he is suffering from cancer since 2018. He died on 24th October peacefully at his home in Los Angeles.

Tyler’s manager in a statement said that whoever has met him knows that they have made a friend for life. Tyler is survived by his wife Jennifer Carno. The manager also said that he bravely fought his illness. Moreover, he was also a brave campaigner for those who were suffering from prostate cancer. The actor’s cancer was at an advanced stage and it even spread to his bones.

James got famous because of the role of Gunther. It was a character from FRIENDS who was a coffee shop worker at Central Perk. He appeared in 148 episodes out of 236 and is one of the most recruiting characters of the show. Moreover, in honor of the show, in 2009 he even opened a temporary replica of the Central Perk. He even appeared for a promotional video led by Matt LeBlanc when Matt failed to get another character recruit for it.
