The Walking Dead Finale Failed to Utilize the Exciting New Variant Zombies

Major action and major deaths await (spoilers ahead)

As the finale of AMC’s long-running survival horror drama The Walking Dead rolled in, fans expected something major things from the variant zombies who had been set up in the preceding episodes. However, they were just lost in the mix with nothing remarkable taking place.

The series began in 2010 and the zombie capabilities were always a bit unclear. The initial seasons saw the undead running, climbing, and other things. Fast forward to The Walking Dead: World Beyond and season 11, we get variant zombies. These creatures could once again climb and have a bit of intelligence and used weapons.

Season 11 was the conclusion of the series. The Commonwealth was attacked by a herd that contained evolving dead, and many survivors were caught by surprise. Despite the action and heavy setups, variants were featured very less and did not have any major presence, aside from being lit on fire in the end. Could the absent variants have something bigger to do with what’s to come from The Walking Dead universe?

The reason for the disappointment was that the variants were teased a great amount in the penultimate episode. After all, it ended with climbers raining from above on the survivors and thousands of innocents. A setup for the heroes versus the variants was also expected. However, all that happened was Negan and the team fighting them briefly before joining Darryl in the hospital.

Connection to France

The Walking Dead: World Beyond suggested a great deal that the initial zombie virus began in France, and scientists created variants to stop the outbreak. The upcoming Daryl Dixon series is now believed to explore the rest of the variants hidden across Europe, and perhaps they will be done justice in them.
