Sometimes it’s just plain ridiculous
It’s the Oscars season again, and Hollywood, as well as other industries, have put together some great titles. While those were celebrated, many worthy films and performances didn’t make the cut. Was it because they didn’t measure up to the nominated titles, or because of something else? Let’s read on and find out.
Snubbed actors and directors
Let’s talk leading ladies first. Jessica Chastain, Nicole Kidman, Olivia Colman, and others had put up wonderful performances that got them nominated. But one shock that came here was when Lady Gaga didn’t get a single nod for her performance in House of Gucci. Or when Rachel Zegler or Alana Haim didn’t get nominated for their roles in West Side Story and Licorice Pizza respectively.
On the list of Supporting Actresses, Caitriona Balfe got snubbed for her role in Belfast; Ruth Negga for Passing; and Cate Blanchett for Nightmare Alley.
When it comes to actors, Nicolas cage didn’t get nominated for his stellar performance in the indie drama, Pig.
As for Supporting Actor, West Side Story‘s Mike Faist got snubbed. Then comes Ben Affleck’s role of Count Pierre d’Alençon in The Last Duel. On top of that, Affleck was nominated for a Razzie, which makes even the casual watcher stare in disbelief.
Snubbed directors and movies
There were brilliant directions in 2021, but some still flew under the radar for the Oscar critics. This includes Denis Villeneuve for Dune; Guillermo del Toro for Nightmare Alley for big projects. Newcomers Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Lost Daughter), and Rebecca Hall (Passing) made wonderful adaptations of two novels, and still didn’t get a nod. Veteran Joel Coen, who made the intense and beautiful The Tragedy of Macbeth was also overlooked.
As for movies, David Lower’s The Green Night was simply omitted like it didn’t even happen. Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel was also skipped. Then there is Spider-Man: No Way Home, probably the biggest movie of the year. It not only had the best cameos, but also a really moving story at the core. Others include Tick Tick…Boom!, Mass, Last Night in Soho, Spencer, and Passing.
